A Few Words

About Us

The “HERLEAP” project aims to train and develop the capacity of 100 grassroots politically inclined women in Nigeria, including those with disabilities, to enable them to take on leadership roles in the governance of the country. The goal of the program is to produce an all-encompassing woman who is mentored to build self-confidence, public speaking skills, conflict resolution skills ad lots more.  The program is open to all women, regardless of education, social status, political affiliation, religion, or ethnicity, and will run for 7 days (classes).

The program connects professional mentors who possess specific skills, knowledge and experience with grassroots female politicians, to help enhance their personal skills, aspirations and political will. Mentoring and sensitization activities have been shown to help individuals who are keen to make positive advancements and promote intellectual, interpersonal and emotional growth. Through positive reinforcement, life-changing support can be provided to foster individuals’ commitment and dedication to achieve higher levels of success and impact in their lives and political career.

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The goal of this project is to promote and elevate women’s representation in politics and governance. The strategic goal is to enhance the participation of women in decision-making processes at all levels, which in turn will lead to inclusivity and wider, long-lasting impacts

Open to all women, regardless of education, social status, political affilation or ethnicity
Women hold 5% of decision-making positions in Nigeria, and the National Assembly’s average representation of women in both houses is negligibly low (0.05%)
Despite ongoing campaigns and efforts aimed at achieving equal representation of women in governance, men and women are still not being treated equally
For Nigeria’s democracy to thrive, every group in its population must actively contribute to governance
Women’s voices need to be heard, and their experiences and expertise utilized for the best growth and development of the country

Objectives

The project has the following OBJECTIVES to achieve its overall goal of promoting and elevating women’s representation in politics and governance

  • To promote transformative leadership by encouraging women to actively participate in politics and grassroots commitments.
  • To raise strong and capable women leaders in politics and governance at both local and national levels.
  • To enhance the capacity of women leaders and groups at both national and local levels to participate actively in nation building.
  • To equip women leaders with the necessary skills to bring intelligent and practical solutions to challenges at local and national levels, putting them on par with their male counterparts.
  • To increase the number of women in government and enhance their skills to actively participate in elections as candidates and voters.
